As a Christian, what can you say about this movie?
Proverbs 11:30 The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life,
and whoever captures souls is wise.
I was very moved by this korean movie entitled, “A Day With My Son/Adeul.” It’s a tearjerker and keeps you thinking of things you might have thought but never really given the time to deliberate and understand. The scene goes like this:
After kneeling down infront of an idol, the prisoner was approached by a priest. The priest asked him, “How come there’s so much you wanna know?”
The prisoner ask the priest, “Where will I go after I die? After I die, will I be able to meet everybody I want to meet?…”
The priest replied, “Not all murderers go to hell. There is a place that is much better than hell. Uhhmm… If you repent of all your sins, from the bottom of your heart, then you can go there. God wouldn’t be God if he wasn’t benevolent.”
The prisoner was curious and asked, “So where is this place? Is it in the Bible?” He added, “I read the bible three times… I just read by bits and pieces, as if I were reading a newspaper. You know, I have been here for a while. Hey! Where is this place?”
The priest answered, “Not everything is written in the BIble. So that’s why you need to come and listen. I heard that myself.
The prisoner asked him, “God talked to you? He did? He talked to you here?
The priest answered, “It was, I think, two months ago.”
The prisoner replied, “Do I look like a dumbass to you? Go a head. Be honest. You think, I’m some kind of a half-wit. That’s why you kept on pulling my legs. Even a priest goes to hell if he lies. Nobody can save his ass.”
The priest also said something like, “…God was able to create the light, the world and the human beings in one day!
The prisoner answered back, “No. It took him 6 days. And he took a day off because he was tired“…”I told you, I read the Bible three times from cover to cover”, then he whispered before he left, “What is wrong with you really…”
After reading the above or watching the movie, tell us what you think about the conversation between the priest and the prisoner. While you recall the convesation, think of this verse:
“This is what the LORD Almighty says: ‘Ask the priests what the law says:
Were you satisfied with that priest’s answers? Can you find yourself in the shoes of the prisoner?
I want you to watch this movie and tell me what your thoughts as a Christian. Focus on the essence of the story, logical and biblical speaking. And tell me if you can identify yourselves as a son, a prisoner, a father, a priest, a mother from the characters. Have you discovered anything, something about God, and relate how He longed to see the Israelites and the Gentiles?
This movie tells something about how God loves us very much. He wants us to understand what reality and prison feels like. He wants us to know Him. But a person can only relate to things around him fully, if he has studied the basics in the Holy Bible. And he can’t be called a Christian without these teachings and without following them by heart.
2 Timothy 3:16
All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
Romans 15:4 For whatever was written in earlier times was written for our instruction, so that through perseverance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.
2 Peter 1:20 But know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one’s own interpretation,
